Hang gliding - Hill Flying

Most people get into Hang gliding because they dream of flying from the hills.  We recognise this and aim a good part of our training at helping you reach that goal.  In effect Airways Airsports offer a time and energy efficient method of learning to fly a hang glider from the hills.  So take a day taster and let us show you the best route to living your dreams and learning to fly.

There are two ways of learning to fly the hills.  The old way ,where you spend countless weeks or months sitting on training slopes waiting for the perfect conditions to learn in.  Or the new way, where we teach you to fly using tandem tuition on the Aerotow at the airpark before taking you onto the hills for a couple of days to complete the course.

The advantages of learning your basic flying skills using tandem Aerotow rather than a hill are as follows.

1) Every lesson, from the first, involves a minimum of 20 minutes in the air, flying.

2) Your instructor gives you one on one tuition.

3) You don't have to carry a hang glider (that weighs up to 35KG) up a hill in order to get a 10 second flight back down.

4) This method is less affected by weather.

So what does this mean for you?  Well a few things spring to mind...After your first lesson you will have spent more time in the air than in your first 5 days learning on a hill! You won't spend all day waiting around for 'your turn' you turn up for your lessons, fly and go.  By the time you finish the course you will have the two key ratings that all HG pilots aspire to; Hill and Aerotow.

Once you have completed your basic skills training, the hill course goes on to cover all aspects of hill flying; hill take offs, flying with others, ridge soaring, the effect of wind and weather on the hills and all other skills that are specific to the hill environment.

Having said all that there is one other thing we would ask you to do before choosing a school and spending your hard earned cash....go out and see the schools in action (you are about to spend a lot of money so it's well worth investing the time).  At Airways you can come down to check us out by booking a day taster, or just come down for a cup of tea and a look around.  The good news is, that if you take a day taster and go on to fly with us, we'll credit what you paid for your taster against the cost of your full course.
